Reader’s Question:

Hi. I just got my drivers license here in Missouri. I learned that my auto insurance premium rate will be high just because I am a teen driver. Why is that? I am a responsible and careful driver, isn’t that going to be a consideration?

Leopold

Independence, MO

Hello, Leopold of Missouri. It’s nice to know that you are a responsible and careful motorist. We need more drivers like you.

Unfortunately, auto insurance companies will give you a higher than usual auto insurance because of your age. Statistics show that teen drivers figure in accidents more often that mature motorists. This is not to say that all teen drivers are reckless, but from a business point of view, it would not make sense to consider teen drivers as generally levelheaded drivers. Stats just won’t back it up. Another factor is your lack of driving experience. It is a fact that you haven’t been driving around Independence for a long time. Your driving skill is still not as refined as auto insurance companies would like.

There are ways to affect your auto insurance premium positively. If you enroll in a defensive driving class, for example, the auto insurance company just might smile your way. You have to show proof that you really are a careful and responsible driver. Of course, you have to maintain a really clean driving history for that to really stick. There are auto insurance companies that provide discounts to students who have good grades at school. If you’re still a student, you might want to work on that, too.

You see, YOU may be a responsible and careful teen driver, but the rest of the teen driver population picked up the slack for you for irresponsibility for you.
