Reader’s Question:

My teen-aged son will soon graduate, and he was accelerated, so he is one year ahead of his batch. Will I be able to get him a discount rate if I get him an auto insurance policy? We live here in Missouri.

Bob

Kansas City, Missouri

Graduating from school there in Missouri earlier than expected is not a prerequisite for lower auto insurance rates. In general, young drivers are considered high risks not because they did not do well in school but because they are less experienced than older drivers. However, you may find a few auto insurance companies that offer discounts to students who perform well in school. Mostly, these auto insurance companies offer discounts that apply to medical bills, bodily injury, comprehensive and collision damages, and property damage liability, provided that the young driver meets the requirements set for the discounts.

Students with good academic performances are given discounts by auto insurance companies because they are perceived to be more responsible than those do not perform well. Statistics show that those who have high grade point averages (GPA) have the tendency to be more responsible when driving on the road. Therefore, this discount does not only acknowledge that these students can be responsible drivers, but it also encourages the others to be more responsible, both in school and on the road.

If you think that you are eligible and you want to avail a discount for having high GPAs, I suggest you talk to your auto insurance agent and ask if a discount is possible. You may likely be required to give a copy of your son’s grades, so it would be best if you prepare it beforehand.
